If you have shipped a bounty before, you know the failure mode. The PR looks fine. The CI is green. You merge it because the bounty has been sitting for two weeks, and the next morning a customer reports a regression in a code path the patch never touched. The bounty was paid. The bug came back wearing a different hat.

TaskBounty was built around closing that gap. Algora was built around the older, simpler promise: post a bounty on a GitHub issue, a human contributor picks it up, you merge, they get paid. Both models are valid. They are not the same product.

What Algora is good at

Algora has been doing this longer than us. They have a real marketplace of contributors who already know the platform, a brand inside the open-source funding world, and a reasonable answer to the basic question "how do I pay a developer for fixing this issue."

If you are a project with a healthy human contributor pool and the work you want done is the kind a maintainer is comfortable reviewing by eye, that workflow has not been broken. It is the workflow GitHub-native bounty platforms have been refining since BountySource.

We are not pretending otherwise. We are pointing at a different problem.

The verification gap

Most bounty platforms stop at "the PR was merged." That works when the reviewer has the context, the time, and the standards to catch a bad fix. It breaks at the boundary every team eventually hits: tests pass, but I would reject this in review.

That sentence is the entire reason TaskBounty exists.

Concretely, "tests pass but I would reject this" looks like:

  • The fix mutates a global to make the test green.
  • A new function is added that duplicates an existing helper because the agent did not find it.
  • The reproduction case is asserted, but the underlying invariant the bug violated is not.
  • The patch swallows the exception that was the actual signal.
  • The change touches twelve files where two would do, and now the diff is unreviewable.

A maintainer with five minutes and ten open PRs cannot reliably catch all five. The fix gets merged. The bug comes back, or a new one shows up next quarter.

TaskBounty closes this gap with three things:

  1. Every fix ships with a regression test. Not a smoke test, not a snapshot. A test that fails on the bug and passes after the fix. The bounty is not payable unless that test exists and the agent can demonstrate the failure-to-pass transition.
  2. Verification runs in an E2B sandbox before you ever see the PR. We clone your repo, apply the patch, and run your CI as configured in the repo. A submission that does not get a green build never reaches your inbox. You are reviewing pre-filtered work, not raw output.
  3. Coverage Uplift as a first-class task type. "Raise coverage in src/billing/ from 41% to 75%, pay $400 only if it lands." No other bounty board has this. It is the bounty version of paying for the outcome instead of the effort.

If your worry is that AI code reviews are easy to fool, that is a fair worry. Our answer is that the gate is your CI, not ours. We do not get to say "looks good." Your tests do.

When Algora is the right choice

Pick Algora if:

  • You only want human contributors and you do not trust AI-generated patches in your codebase. That is a coherent position. We are not going to argue you out of it.
  • You are funding open-source maintainership in a community where the bounty itself is partly a recognition signal, not just a transaction.
  • The issues you want fixed are the kind where review-by-reading is the right gate, not test execution. Design discussions, doc rewrites, architectural changes that no test can express.
  • You need a platform with a multi-year track record running through a public marketplace.

These are real reasons, and "TaskBounty is newer" is a real cost. If any of the above describes you, Algora is fine.

When TaskBounty is the right choice

Pick TaskBounty if:

  • You have a backlog of bugs that are testable. If you can describe the bad behavior as an assertion, we can verify the fix.
  • You want regression coverage to come with the fix automatically, not as a separate cleanup task you never get to.
  • You have an under-tested module and you would rather pay for an outcome ("75% coverage") than for hours.
  • You want to fund work without becoming the review bottleneck. The sandbox does the first pass. You only see fixes that already pass your CI.
  • You are willing to write tighter acceptance criteria up front in exchange for less review work on the back end.

The trade is real. You do more work specifying. We do more work verifying. You do less work reviewing.

Three pain points we hear from people who have used Algora

These are paraphrased from public complaints across HN, Trustpilot, and similar sources. We are not naming users.

  1. Fee surprise at payout. Funders expected one number, then the breakdown including payment processing landed differently. Whether or not the published rate has changed since, the experience of "the math at the end did not match the math at the start" is the recurring shape of the complaint. TaskBounty publishes 80/20 (contributor 80%, platform 20%) as the all-in split.

  2. Bounty merged, then the bug came back. This is the most common quiet failure: the PR looked right, got merged, and the underlying invariant was not preserved. Without a required regression test, there is nothing in the workflow that would have caught it. TaskBounty's regression-test gate exists specifically because this is the modal failure of the human-review-only model.

  3. Long tail of work that never gets picked up. A bounty sits for weeks because the issue is gnarly, the payout is small, or the contributor pool happens to be busy. The funder has the cash committed and no fix in sight. TaskBounty's auto-refund at 14 days is the contractual answer: if the work has not landed and verified, your money comes back without a support ticket.

We are not claiming any of these are universal. They are the recurring shape of complaints across multiple platforms in this category, not just Algora. They are the things we deliberately designed around.

What we have not verified

A few competitor data points we tried to confirm and could not, as of this writing:

  • The current Algora platform fee on their pricing page (numbers have changed; check before quoting).
  • Whether Polar still operates an active bounty product or has moved fully to billing.
  • IssueHunt's published refund and minimum-bounty terms.
  • Boss.dev's pricing.

We would rather leave these blank than fill them with last year's data.
